The Club Crest

For the first five years of the Club's existence, a variety of front pieces were used for the printed program.  For the next five years a borrowed crest was used.  The Club's present-day crest, as shown here, first appeared on the programme for the 1919 - 20 season.

Ralph Kinsman, designer of the crest, placed in the archives an interpretation of the symbolism and a translation of the inscription:

"The feature of the Crest is the great oak tree which, with Nature's care, grows from a small acorn year by year until it becomes one of Nature's noblest monuments. Finally it bears fruit, producing new acorns to carry on its example.

The Tuesday Literary Club, like the oak tree, grew from a small beginning, but through the care and patience of its founder, has steadily gained in strength and influence since its inception. It also represents a noble monument to manhood in the community in which it has grown. The branches are a reminder of the splendid example which its members may exert. Like the oak producing acorns, so the Tuesday Literary Club has produced new organization of similar character to extend its work.

The Club, like the tree, is well-rooted in the associations and ideals of the past. From them it has drawn both strength and inspiration.

The open books and keys show that through the Club's activities the finest realms of literature and understanding are opened to its members.

The Latin phrase, Indocti Discant, ament mininisse perti, is translated, Let the unskilled learn and the learned improve their recollections.

From the rising sun we learn that our day is all too short, and that the present is the time of opportunity. Each must take his part in the work of the Club, while he may, to secure its benefits and spread them to others while the sun still shines."
